Design for Intent with Additive Manufacturing: Case Study

Conformal cooling channels are internal geometries Metal 3D Printing Conformal Cooling Channels Case Studyoften difficult to machine with traditional manufacturing processes. Additive manufacturing allows components to be designed for maximum performance and intent, rather than the traditional mindset of manufacturability. With selective laser melting technology, complexity comes for free!

In this case study SLM Solutions, in conjunction with ABB Oy, Drives and Controls, the world’s leading manufacturer of drives and PLCs, explored the implementation of conformal cooling channels for a tooling insert to improve the efficiency of production while, at the same time, increasing the resulting quality through less defective products. Metal 3D printing technology allowed multiple design iterations to be built and tested to identify the optimized profile.
